Our Adventure

Outdoor Education Programme
Glenfir delivers a diverse, enriched, outdoor education programme, which provides students with the opportunity to explore and discover the natural world.

Our programme is structured to promote personal growth and leadership opportunities, and to build environmental awareness and respect within our student body. Activities such as rock climbing, river rafting, winter camping, canoeing, skiing, snowboarding, horseback riding, mountain biking, sailing, hiking, orienteering, snowshoeing, and outdoor survival training sessions provide our students with problem solving and team building opportunities within a natural, inspiring environment.

Glenfir combines environmental education with outdoor education to provide a well rounded perspective of the environment. Where appropriate, sessions are designed to help students meet the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.  Each session will take place on a Friday, approximately once a month.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award
Over 30,000 Canadians between the ages of 14 and 25 are currently participating in this Youth Canadians Challenge. Founded in 1956 by Prince Philip, the worldwide programme allows youth to develop a sense of responsibility to themselves and to their communities. This programme of distinction requires four areas of participation: community service, expeditions and exploration, skills development, and physical fitness.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is widely recognized by employers and educators. The award reflects the experience and life skills Glenfir prides itself on offering its students.

Some of the benefits to students include:

  1. -increased motivation, self-confidence, and self-reliance
  2. -a sense of achievement and responsibility
  3. -new skills, interests, and talents
  4. -leadership and teamwork opportunities-improved problem-solving, decision-making, and interpersonal skills
  5. -enhanced self-esteem

Extra-Curricular Activities
Glenfir offers a wide range of lunch-time intramurals and after-school activities. These events change from term to term and year to year as Glenfir matches students' interests with staff skills.  Consequently, in 2007/2008, rowing was added as an extra-curricular activity. With two new boats, experienced instructors, and Okanagan Lake in our backyard, students can now experience the thrill of rowing.

In addition to rowing, indoor floor hockey, badminton, basketball, volleyball, band, and study hall were some of the activities offered after school during 2007/2008. Some activities, such as floor hockey, were offered in all three terms, while others, such as cross-country running, were offered seasonally. In 2008/2009 students will continue to experience new activities, further develop their interests, or enhance their studies through participation in the extra-curricular activities.

Rites of Passage
The 2008/2009 school year holds exciting rites of passage for students from junior kindergarten through grade twelve. Students will have the opportunity to experience an off-campus trip that will closely follow their year's curriculum to provide a practical, unforgettable, and fun educational experience.
